Why Local Control?

My main goal was to consolidate various smart-home devices from different brands under a single, locally controlled dashboard. I specifically chose Home Assistant to keep our home automation local, secure, and independent from third-party cloud outages, ensuring our privacy and reliability even if the internet goes down.

Configuration & Deployment

I installed Home Assistant on a virtual machine and connected Zigbee/Z-Wave smart switches to create a unified network. I mapped out our sensors and lights, and then wrote custom YAML automation rules to manage dynamic lighting conditions and trigger safety alerts. This project deepened my understanding of local networking, smart home protocols, and system administration.
